Crossplay represented more than a technical change. It represented a philosophical shift in how the gaming industry treats players. The old model treated players as platform property. The new model treats them as individuals who happen to own particular hardware. Friends can now play together regardless of their console preferences. Family members on different platforms can share gaming experiences. The walled garden era is not entirely over, but its walls are no longer impassable.
